Please join UNB Fredericton's Faculty of Arts for the annual W. C. Desmond Pacey Memorial Lecture. Dr. Lesley Frank, Tier II Canada Research Chair in Food, Health, and Social Justice, and Professor of Sociology at Acadia University will deliver the 2022 Pacey Lecture entitled Out of Milk: Infant Food Insecurity in a Rich Nation.

Did you know that mothers who can least afford to buy infant formula are less likely to continue breastfeeding? This paradox sets the backdrop for this talk, based on Dr. Lesley Frank’s book Out of Milk - which reveals the experiences of mothers struggling to feed their children and the policy gaps that put babies at risk of going hungry in Canada. She will answer the breastfeeding paradox using highlights from several mixed-methods studies that explore the problem of infant food insecurity. The talk will expose a succession of public policy failures in Canada that undermine caregivers’ ability to successfully feed their infants and offers solutions to support families caring for young children.
