How, Why, When to incorporate media arts into the research process for knowledge implementation

The intention of this gathering is to move beyond the definitions and introductions to Knowledge Mobilization and the constellation of terms known as K*. Increasingly, those seeking resources and support for conducting their work through grants and funds are being asked to include these terms into their applications. With little consensus and a lack of training about what these expectations mean, we often reduce them to simply ticking the box. With good intentions, we actually reinforce the very issues that the field is attempting to address.

By the end of this gathering, you will have more questions than answers. This is intentional. This is not designed to be simply an introduction to the concepts of knowledge mobilization. That information is valuable, but it tells. It does not show. We are moving more deeply into this sphere, and we want you to come ready, be curious, and see yourself within the systems of how what we know becomes what we do.

To embody what we intend – to practice what we preach – the gathering will also incorporate three technical aspects:

- The DOCTalks Guide V1.0: the essential components of cross-sector collaboration that uses media arts and documentary as its knowledge-based medium for impact

- Click Your Own Adventure Prototyping: this is a format for shifting the manner in which we come together digitally. We are keen to welcome you to it as we prototype this so it can be an experience for you as a user, and a tool for you as a creator

- IDEA Matrix: as the dialogue about mobilizing knowledge is ultimately about the nexus between those who generate it, and those who use it, the conversation about who are these generators and users of knowledge must be contextualized. In order to incorporate a process of common ground for your projects, we are building tangible resources to embed Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) perspectives in our work
