Event Details:
The 37th Dineen Memorial Lecture will feature Dr. Øyvind Stavdahl, Associate Professor,
Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
and Co-founder of Subsea Robotics Company Eelume, presenting “Diving deeper, from diabetes treatments to subsea interventions.”
Øyvind Stavdahl was born in Lillehammer,Norway, in 1967. He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway, in 1994 and 2002, respectively.
In 1998, he became a Research Scientist and, in 2004, a Senior Scientist, with the Department of Applied Cybernetics, SINTEF Information and Communication Technology. Following a period as a postdoctoral fellow and Lecturer, he became an Associate Professor with the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, NTNU in 2008.
Dr. Stavdahl spent parts of 2005 as a Visiting Fellow with the Institute of Biomedical engineering, UNBF, and is currently (2017) a Visiting Academic with Auckland Bioengineering Institute in Auckland, New Zealand. He was a co-founder of Cypromed, a small Norwegian company that pioneered the use of Li-ion batteries in upper-limb prostheses in the late 1990'ies, and he is presently a co-founder of the subsea robotics company Eelume. His research interests include rehabilitation engineering, human-movement analysis, and biomimetic robotics.
The Dineen Memorial Lectures began in 1980 and honour former engineering professor and UNB president James O. Dineen. The lectures, which focus on technology and its impact on society, are sponsored by the University of New Brunswick, the Faculty of Engineering in Fredericton, the Department of Engineering in Saint John, and the Associated Alumni of both campuses.
