Grad studies guidelines & updates

In alignment with the most recent notice concerning UNB operations going forward, the guidelines concerning graduate student activities are updated as follows, effective immediately.

Courses and coursework resumes March 23

Graduate courses and coursework were suspended for the week of March 17-20. Courses and coursework will resume March 23 via alternative online modes.

Graduate students to study remotely

Graduate students in research-based programs are expected to continue their research and scholarly work remotely.

Relevant university resources (e.g. library resources) will be made accessible online. Other graduate student research activity normally conducted on campus (in labs, offices) will be suspended.

Any off-campus research activity conducted under the auspices of partner organizations is subject to the guidelines of those organizations.

Thesis defences

Beginning March 17, 2020 thesis defences will be conducted virtually (via Zoom or a similar web-based platform).

Thesis defenses at the Masters level will be optional, at the discretion of the Graduate Academic Unnit (GAU) in consultation with the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). PhD defences that are scheduled will continue and will be administered virtually. The SGS will contact PhD candidates and examiners directly with further details and instructions concerning these defences.

GSTA positions

Graduate students employed in GSTA positions for the winter term can continue to provide course support in virtual fashion – i.e., from off-campus. They should coordinate with their faculty instructors on how such support can be continued. In-person tutorials, or instruction of other kinds, are suspended.

GSRA positions

Graduate students employed in GSRA positions for the winter term can continue to provide support for these research projects in virtual fashion – i.e., from off-campus. They should coordinate with their faculty supervisors on how such support can be continued. On-campus research support by graduate students is suspended.

Financial support

Financial support packages for graduate students for the winter term will be maintained, unaffected by these operational modifications.
