Centre for Musical Arts

The Centre for Musical Arts (CMA) is UNB’s music hub, which offers a variety of non-credit and credit music programs. Our mission is to offer high-quality music programming and activities, accessible to both UNB students and the wider Fredericton community.

Private lessons

Private virtual lessons are available on a wide variety of instruments and styles. We maintain a roster of highly talented and qualified instructors to help you develop existing skills or learn a new instrument. Fees vary from $20-$60 per lesson depending on the instructor and lesson length.

Music workshops

Over the past few years, we have offered workshops for a wide array of musical tastes and ability levels. This summer, we're moving our workshops online so you can enrich your musical lives from home.

Workshops are open to the public and are geared towards amateur, student, and professional musicians alike.

Jazz Theory

Date/Time: Tuesdays, March 9 - 30, 2021 | 6 pm - 7 pm
Instructor: Jason Flores
Cost: $60 (+HST)

If you have learned to play an instrument, but are now looking to expand your theoretical knowledge, this course is for you.

Take control of your own musical creativity by learning the basics of jazz theory. Scales, extended harmony, composition, and arranging lessons will set you up to unleash your creativity on any musical project. Basic knowledge of music theory and notation are recommended.

Movement for Musicians

Instructor: Jillian Beacon
Cost: $60 (+HST)

Gain practical strategies for managing the stress and anxiety of music performance and practice using mindful movement methods to calm the nervous system, ground the body
and focus attention. This course is for any musician, music educator, and music hobbyist wishing to improve their physical ease. Guided by Ph.D. Human Kinetics candidate and Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, Jillian Beacon.

Songwriting

Date/Time: Tuesdays, March 9 - 30, 2021 | 6 pm - 7 pm
Instructor: Charles Harding
Cost: $60 (+HST)

You can expect to learn the fundamentals of song-writing from the perspective of a DIY musician. This course is meant for beginners of all ages who are interested in writing
songs, "bedroom recording" processes, releasing their music, and engaging with their local arts community. The hope is that these workshops will provide participants with a foundation
that inspires a self-directed songwriting practice.

Performance Anxiety

Date/Time: Thursdays, March 11 - April 1, 2021 | 7 pm - 8 pm
Instructor: Mark Kleyn
Cost: $60 (+HST)

Many musicians, actors, or public speakers suffer from performance anxiety. While there is no hard and fast cure, this workshop series will give you understanding and basic tools to work with your performance anxiety.

Mark Kleyn, the workshop host, is a professional violist who has researched the topic of performance psychology to better understand their own performance psychology. This course is for any performer who would like to do what they love under pressure more comfortably.
