We need to improve our Risk Management processes to ensure we are eliminating Serious Injury and Fatalities (SIF) in our workplaces while still managing the types of incidents that are typically the highest costs to our organizations including sprain and strain type injuries. The session will provide an overview of the safety risk management process using the ISO 31000 model and share a dual path strategy to address potential SIF incidents as well as managing lower severity but higher frequency type incidents.

About the presenter

Darrel Nickerson is the Director of Health and Safety for Irving Forestry Services based in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada and has been involved in Safety for over 26 years. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from UNB Saint John and a Master of Science in Environmental Management from Webster University, St. Louis, Mo. He holds a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)® designation and a Six Sigma Green Belt certification from the Juran Institute. He is a professional member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and current chairperson for the Board of Safety Services New Brunswick and previously held the position of Regional Vice President - Atlantic Region for the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE). He is also an instructor for the Occupational Health and Safety Diploma (DOHS) program with the University of New Brunswick.

This webinar is part of our "Let's Talk Safety" webinar series

It has become increasingly clear how many organizations were not prepared or were underprepared to deal with an infectious outbreak. In this presentation, we will introduce attendees to the new international standard guidelines (ISO 45006) for how organizations can prevent exposure to, and manage the risks associated with, infectious diseases of all types for any size organization.

In this webinar, we will:

  • Introduce the safeguarding process
  • Review the legislative requirements for machine safety and discuss the new standard, CSA Z432-23: Safeguarding of Machinery
  • Learn how to identify machinery hazards & select appropriate safeguards including hand protection best practices
  • Review the requirements of machine lockout and discuss implementation of a proactive machine safety program

About the presenters

Glyn Jones is a partner at EHS Partnerships Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta. He is a consulting occupational health and safety professional with 35 years of experience in the field and has presented at numerous conferences. Glyn is a chemical engineer by training and is a Professional Engineer. He completed a Master’s degree specializing in occupational health and safety, holds numerous professional certifications, and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)®. He is a very involved conference speaker and has been teaching occupational and environmental health and safety for a number of Canadian universities for 25 years.

Mike Gordon is an associate at EHS Partnerships Ltd. In Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has over 25 years of experience as a mechanical engineer, specializing in workplace safety. Mike’s areas of expertise include safeguarding and hazard and risk management. He helps clients maximize productivity and achieve safety goals by designing customized safeguarding solutions.

Kristin Petaski is an associate at EHS Partnerships Ltd. In Winnipeg, Manitoba. She has 19 years of experience as a manufacturing engineer with a strong focus on occupational health and safety. Specializing in machine safeguarding and risk assessments, she helps companies control machinery-related hazards while keeping operational goals at the forefront.
