Band Camp (ages 11-17)

Our longstanding flagship Band Camp is going virtual this year!

Students will still enjoy the benefit of MasterClasses, chamber music, and full band through alternative delivery methods. Camps will run in the mornings, with frequent breaks from the screen. You’ll get to work on technique, see your friends from last year, and play your part in a virtual orchestra and chamber group. One year of previous experience is suggested.

Students should have access to a computer, internet connection, and Zoom.

Daily schedule

• 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. - MasterClass
• 9:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. - BREAK
• 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. - Chamber Group
• 10:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. - BREAK
• 11 a.m. to 12 p.m - Full Band

About instructor

Julian Smerdon has been teaching at UNB camp since its inception in 1993. He was an Itinerant Music Instructor in Toronto and Etobicoke from 1993 to 1999 and has been teaching classroom instrumental music programs in schools since 1998.

Julian’s bands and small ensembles regularly perform at the Kiwanis Music Festival and Music Fest in Toronto. Julian has had groups perform at a TEDx conference at the Science Centre in Toronto and they have also performed at the Ontario Music Educators’ Association Conference. Julian has organized and taken trips for Concert Band, Jazz Band and Choir to France, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy and several US cities. Since coming to Trafalgar Castle School in Whitby, Ontario in 2011, Julian has built a strong band and string performance program with a focus on extra-curricular band and chamber music.
