Matting Your Art

Photo: Photo mats and equipment

CCOM 2810

There is something timeless and classic about a finely matted photo. Matting puts the finishing touches on and adds visual appeal to your favourite photos. In this 1-day workshop, let photographer Roger Smith walk you through the basic steps of how to choose, measure, cut and use matting. By the end of the workshop, you can either display your matted photo as-is or go on to frame it!

Bring a photo of your choice. White mat board will be provided for photos that are between 5"x7" and 11"x14". However, you are welcome to bring your own matting for larger photos (no larger than 11"x14" or 10"x15"). Frames may be discussed, time permitting.

About the instructor

Roger Smith was born and raised in Fredericton, where he attended FHS and obtained a B.Sc. in Biology and M.Sc. in Plant Pathology from UNB. While working on his M.Sc., he started taking photographs for the UNB Biology Department, and he soon realized that photography was a more interesting pursuit than his research on potato blight.

He recently retired from UNB after over 35 years as a scientific photographer for the Biology Department. Roger is a member of the SilverFish photo collective and Photo Fredericton camera club, and he became a juried member of the NB Crafts Council in 2001. He has been teaching photo courses for CEL since 2006.
