Alumni Award of Distinction

Susan Porter (BSc'80)

Dr. Susan Porter is nationally and internationally regarded for her contributions to graduate education, and in particular for her innovative and extensive work on rethinking the PhD. Currently Dean and Vice Provost of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Porter engaged North American Leaders along with the UBC community to discuss the future of doctoral education in relation to evolving climates in academia and the workplace. In 2015, she launched the ground-breaking Public Scholars Initiative (PSI), a program which now supports doctoral students to include collaborations with public and private sector groups on issues of mutual benefit in their dissertation work. Porter also led an initiative to provide full transparency on graduate program outcomes and to date both this and the PSI have been adopted by universities across Canada. In 2017, Porter was chosen by her peers to serve as President of the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies and has been described as a ‘thought leader’ in Canada.
