Alumni Award of Distinction

Rob Fowler (BSc'91)

Dr. Robert Fowler is a critical care physician at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Research Institute and is a senior scientist in the Trauma, Emergency & Critical Care Research Program. While volunteering with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2014, Fowler played an important role as part of an international team of health care workers treating patients in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia on the threshold of the Ebola Virus outbreak. Fowler helped pioneer a new model of patient care in West Africa, one that is commonly used in North America but had not previously been championed in an Ebola-setting, and helped significantly reduce the virus’ mortality rate. Fowler has been extensively recognized for his work and research, including being named to the Order of Ontario, and receiving the Meritorious Service Cross and the Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award.
