It Begins Here

Inspire | UNB launched its $110 million It Begins Here campaign on November 18 at simultaneous events in Fredericton and Saint John. Seventy-seven million has been committed to the campaign already by alumni, friends, corporations and foundations. Half the goal – $55 million – will be dedicated to student financial support. Read more

Ben Newling heralded with distinguished teaching award

University Highlights | UNB physics professor Benedict Newling has received a 2016 Association of Atlantic Universities’ Distinguished Teaching Award. This award recognizes outstanding teaching through a proven commitment to enhanced student engagement, a reflective and intentional approach to teaching practices, and dedication to improving teaching methods. Read more

CRI celebrates 15 years of growth and accomplishment

University Highlights | In 2001, four UNB aquatic scientists founded CRI with a strong vision and desire to make a difference in the rivers, lakes, and estuaries of New Brunswick and throughout the country. Fifteen years later, the institute has become a world leader in applied aquatic science, with a network that has expanded not only across Canada, but internationally. Read more

World-class wrestling champs

University Highlights | Allyssa Cleaves (BScEng’18) and Samantha Stewart (BRSS’13, BA’14, MEd’18) are the epitome of discipline and perseverance, balancing demanding athletic pursuits with educational excellence.

In October, Cleaves and Stewart represented Canada at the 2016 International University Sports Federation World University Championships in Turkey. They competed with wrestlers from across the globe and both brought home medals. Read more

UNB launches Year 2 of #OnlyHere campaign

University Highlights | UNB has officially entered the second year of its innovative #OnlyHere campaign.

Building on the momentum from 2015-16, we’re sharing our #OnlyHere stories with high school students, their parents, and guidance counselors in Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and PEI. Read more

Sexual assault support advocates join student services team

University Highlights | Committed to fostering a respectful environment and supporting those impacted by sexual assault on its campuses, UNB has hired two full-time sexual assault support workers.

Maggie Forsythe joins the Fredericton campus team and April Jendrosch has taken on the role on the Saint John campus. Read more

Alumnus returns rare stampless letters to UNB

Alumni | Derek Smith (BBA’58) is an avid and respected collector and exhibitor of stampless letters. His impressive collection once included pieces from The Saunders Papers -- that is until he learned that four of the covers from his prize-winning collection had been stolen from the UNB Archives in the early ‘70s. Read more

Sharing her love of bridge

Alumni | Barbara Seagram (BN’70) never imagined that her love of bridge would one day translate into her authoring 24 books and opening a school to teach the game to other enthusiasts. Seagram says that there is something for everyone in the game of bridge, and that no one ever gets bored with it. Read more

Order of New Brunswick’s newest inductees

Alumni | Three distinguished alumni were invested into the Order of New Brunswick this month.

John P. Barry (BA’65, BCL’66), Judith Chernin Budovitch (BEd’70, LLB’75) and Deborah Lyons (BA’71, DLITT’15) join more than 140 accomplished individuals who have been invested with the order for their dedication and service to the province, its people and communities. Read more

Scotiabank supports students learning and working abroad

Impact | On Sept. 14, representatives from Scotiabank announced its commitment to furthering its international study awards at UNB with a leadership gift of $1 million to the Cedric Ritchie Scotiabank International Study Awards and Scotiabank Special International Internships. The gift is part of UNB's It Begins Here campaign, which has a goal of $110 million, half of which will be devoted to student support. Read more

Major gift from campaign co-chair

Impact | It Begins Here campaign co-chair Robert Quartermain (BSc’77, DSc’09) is contributing $500,000 to the campaign, with $300,000 designated for earth science scholarships and $200,000 for UNB Fredericton’s new Centre for Health Living. This new gift will help ensure more students have access to transformational education at UNB and enable the faculty of kinesiology to grow its health and wellness research programs. Read more
