The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Legal Clinic Staff Lawyer with the Faculty of Law. This is a one-year term with the possibility of extension, full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with a salary range of $64,156 - $89,820 per annum.
The UNB Legal Clinic provides legal practice experience to students and improves access to justice in New Brunswick. The UNB Legal Clinic offers legal services in the areas of housing, employment, and social benefits.
Position summary:
- Provide legal services to clients of the UNB Legal Clinic.
- Administer UNB Legal Clinic practice, liaise with community partners, and aid in organizational development.
- Provide individual representation to clients in the areas of landlord and tenant law, employment law, and social benefits law.
- Supervise law students and provide them relevant training including, but not limited to: practice management, client communication, cultural competence, and trauma-informed lawyering.
- Establish and adhere to administrative and practice management policies that conform to Law Society guidelines and best practices.
- Work with local and regional partners on broader access to justice initiatives.
Requirements/Skills:
- Must have a Juris Doctor degree or a Bachelor of Laws degree.
- At least three years of post-call experience (or the equivalent combination of education and training/experience), including relevant experience in the areas of law at the core of the Legal Clinic's mandate.
- Must be admitted to the bar in a Canadian province or territory, and a practicing member of the Law Society of New Brunswick by the time of appointment without any practice restrictions.
- Demonstrable administrative leadership and managerial skills, preferably in a legal setting.
- Experience, or a demonstrable interest in, teaching law students.
- A good understanding of the principles of effective clinical education, including cultural competence, a genuine commitment to reconciliation, and trauma-informed lawyering.
- Established track record of advocacy work and knowledge of anti-oppressive practice is considered an asset.
- Broad perspective on the role of a community law clinic working in the context of clients with low incomes would also be valuable.
