The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Senior Research Technician with the Canadian Rivers Institute, Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Management. This is a term ending March 29, 2024, full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with a salary range of $46,701 - $60,700 per annum.
This Senior Research Technician would be based within the Canadian Rivers Institute (CRI) at UNB Fredericton and working specifically on the Mactaquac Aquatic Ecosystem Study (MAES) - http://canadarivers-gis.maps.arcgis.com/home/index.html. MAES is a long-term, whole-river ecosystem study and the Senior Research Technician is the lead for all field studies in the biological and physical sciences, sustaining all field operations and associated data acquisition, entry, and security. The position is a mix of responsibilities for overseeing field operations, data management and reporting, and training staff and students.
Position summary:
- Oversee the management of MAES related field equipment, including 4WD trucks, trailers, boats, ATVs, and specialized meters.
- Oversee the fish sampling programmes and associated equipment for MAES teams, e.g., electrofishing (boat and backpack), nets and traps, and tacking/tagging including acoustic/radio/PIT tags and receiver technologies.
- Provide research support for ongoing studies of graduate students and research scientists.
- Represent MAES/CRI in meetings with partners, stakeholders, and the general public.
Requirements/Skills:
- Minimum BSc and preferable a Master's degree in fisheries and aquatic sciences.
- Certificates must include or be quickly achieved for boat operations, Swiftwater Rescue, and electrofishing (both backpack and boat).
- 3-5 years' of experience working in the field including remote locations in the aquatic sciences field of study.
- Experience with Vemco/Innovasea and Lotek technologies, ARIS camera technologies, Sonar, YSI field meters are considered a signifiacnt asset.
- Demonstrated understanding of fish biology, including basic biology of local species, assessing fish health and aging.
- Demonstrated experience with data management and analyses including use of spreadsheets and statistical packages.
- Peer-reviewed publications are a significant asset.
- Willingness and ability to work in adverse weather conditions, seasonally work overtime, weekends, holidays, and variable hours.
- Ability to travel within and outside of the province, sometime for extended periods of time.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work to deadlines.
- Experience leading teams.
- Experience training on field equipment.
- Ability to interact and work well with others and communicate effectively.
- Working language is English, writing is in English, interactions with outside users would benefit from French language experience in writing and conversations.
