The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Operations Foreperson with the Capital Planning & Operations Group. This is a continuing full-time (40 hours per week) position with the GLTA employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a rate of $25.65 per hour.
Under the general direction of the Assistant Maintenance Manager, the Operations Foreperson is accountable for the supervision of the Heavy Equipment Operators, Gardener - Tractor Operator, Truck and Tractor Operators and Labourers in the Capital Planning and Operations Group.
Position summary:
- Responsible to the Assistant Maintenance Manager for the provision of snow and ice control on the Fredericton campus including St. Thomas University and NRC. Maintains accurate daily logs of snow/ice removal action and coordinates these reports with Campus Security requests and reports.
- Provide direction and supervision to the heavy equipment operators, gardener - tractor operator, truck and tractor operators, labourers and seasonal employees for completion of assigned work. Incumbent will be required to operate vehicles and equipment and perform the work of any of their staff as necessary to complete the work assigned to the Operations Group.
- Complete various routine administrative tasks such as initiating work orders, authorizing time slips, leave requests and WorkSafeNB reports, fuel use and reconciliation. Accurately identify operator time, equipment time, and other materials used in tasks whose cost is recoverable by this department.
- Responsible for inventory control and ordering of campus materials and equipment such as salt/sand, crushed rock, gravel and bedding mulch, and other safety accessories such as barricades, and warning lights.
- Minimize and organize overtime and temporary assignments equitably amongst qualified staff in accordance with the Collective Agreements and University policies.
- Responsible for scheduling of excavation jobs. Accountable for the health and safety of their staff.
- Responsible for the transportation of hazardous chemicals or waste products to and from campus facilities. Responsible for clean ups of any spills and environment control.
Requirements/Skills:
- Grade 12 education with training/experience in heavy equipment operation and in equipment maintenance is preferred. Dangerous goods Transportation Certificate and WHMIS Certification required.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 New Brunswick Motor Vehicle License with an endorsement for air brakes.
- Proven experience in heavy equipment operation and effective use and organization of equipment.
- Minimum 3 years proven experience in a supervisory role is essential.
- A demonstrated ability to direct and coordinate work of a number of persons employed at multiple tasks.
- Must have excellent communication skills for interaction with a variety of individuals in the performance of assigned duties.
- Must have working knowledge of traffic regulations and practices applicable to the operation of heavy equipment and the ability to apply these to operating under extreme weather conditions and often in difficult terrain.
- Must have sufficient knowledge of heavy and automotive equipment so as to recognize mechanical problems and report such to supervisors before they become safety hazards or major repairs.
- Must be familiar with safe practices as identified by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Must be capable of physical labour as to be able to assist with breakdowns & the duties of Equipment and Truck Operators.
- Be familiar with and be able to use electronic spreadsheets for monitoring equitable overtime and within the unit.
- Horticultural or grounds maintenance experience is desirable.
- Note: Must be willing and able to report on short notice for overtime as required. A telephone is necessary for call-outs in the event of inclement weather and emergencies.
