The University of New Brunswick welcomes applications for the position of Director of Financial Services & Assistant Comptroller. This is a continuing, full-time (36.25 hours per week) University-wide position with the APT employee group. The salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University Budget funds the position and while this position serves the entire University community, it is located on the Fredericton campus. As Assistant Comptroller, the Board of Governors, as per section 21(3) of the University Act, appoints the incumbent.
Reporting to the Comptroller, this position has primary responsibility for four key operating and service units within Financial Services: Payroll, Accounts Payable & Disbursement, Student Accounts & Receivables and Procurement, along with the coordination of Level 1 IT support. Within these areas, the incumbent will help develop and promote a strong customer service focus and ensure the effective use of technology to improve service and increase productivity. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring controls and procedures are appropriately in place to satisfy internal policies as well as external accounting standards, audit and other statutory requirements. As required, the incumbent will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of policies and procedures as well as be responsible for working with a cross function of units within the University community to ensure collaboration and consultation on a number of initiatives and projects.
As a key member of the Financial Services management team, the incumbent provides critical financial advice and information to the University community, including the President's Executive Team, management, employees and students.
Position summary:
- Lead a talented and dedicated team of 30 people in the continuous, effective and efficient functioning of the Department.
- Lead the University's financial control operations and ensure adherence to the established controls, policies and procedures.
- Support the teams responsible for processing all financial transactions at the University, including payroll, accounts payable, student accounts and procurement, by fostering an environment of trust, cooperation and accountability.
- Coordinate the continuing development and efficient management of the University's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system (Colleague), this involves working closely with a number of University departments including Human Resources and Organizational Development and Information Technology Services.
- Serve as an integral member on a number of University-wide committees by providing sound financial advice and guidance.
- Oversee the relevancy and accuracy of the information maintained on the Department's website, including the timely update of student fees, policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Requirements/Skills:
- Professional Accounting designation.
- 10+ years' experience in progressively responsible positions, preferably within a complex, multi-stakeholder, unionized environment.
- 5+ years of supervisory and leadership experience, demonstrating an ability to be open-minded, flexible and adaptable.
- Ability to create and foster a team environment.
- Aptitude for understanding new technologies and experience managing a large, complex ERP
- Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to co-ordinate and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong working knowledge of government regulations.
- Ability to provide clear, concise and well-researched explanations to questions and / or concerns
