The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Research Prosthetist with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. This is a continuing full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the PTSU employee group. The position is funded by external monies and salary will be commensurate with qualifications & experience.
This person is responsible for clinical services and for contributing to research and development of the Institute concerning clinical prosthetics and related services. The employee provides clinical/technical service to patients requiring limbs. This position has the sole responsibility for certifying the prosthetics service and is legally responsible for the quality control and product safety.
Position summary:
- The Research Prosthetist is the certified practitioner responsible for patient prosthetic care. This includes clinical assessment, patient management, practice management, and clinical documentation.
- Financially responsible for clinic operations and inventory.
- Legally and medically responsible for clinical service and dispensing of prosthetic devises.
- Work closely with Physicians and Surgeons in collaborative ways to ensure the best pre and post-surgical care is provided in order to achieve the best prosthetic rehabilitation for the patient.
- Consult with Orthopedic and Plastic Surgeons regarding the level of amputation and revision surgery to facilitate prosthetic fitting.
- Contribute clinical expertise to the discussion of the Atlantic Clinic for Upper Limb Prosthetics on possible prosthetic management of all cases under consideration.
- Design and supervise the fabrication of the prosthesis or device, including fabrication methods and component selection.
- Supervise and manage the activities of the Research Prosthetics Technician.
- Work closely with the Institute's Occupational Therapist and other members of the Institute's clinical team in order to provide excellent care for each client.
- Provide specialized rehabilitation equipment to patients with complex upper limb pathologies.
- Responsible to the development of new markets for the prosthetics and other related rehabilitation technology.
- Take a lead role in the introduction of new technology relating to prosthetics and rehabilitation, both from the point of defining possible research directions and also to ensure that new technology as adopted as needed.
Requirements/Skills:
- A bachelor's degree in a related field with a postgraduate diploma from an accredited prosthetics program.
- Certified Prosthetic Practitioner, as granted by the Canadian Board for Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotists (CBCPO).
- Some experience in supervision is an asset.
- Understanding of electronics and mechanical engineering is preferred for this position.
