! Transport Terminals, Stations, Ports

Terminals are a necessary part of any transport system. They are used to change from one transport mode to another and to terminate transport process.

Railways used 'station', or a place where a railway train stopped, or becomes stationary. Water transport generally uses the word 'port'. Air transportation also uses 'airport' and 'station' in operations. In residential areas there are 'carports', but the terminals for automobiles are usually 'parking spaces', 'parking lots', and the multi-story buildings are 'parking garages'.

TERMINAL is quite often used as shorthand for 'terminal building' or terminal facility. In all cases the function tends to be the same. The differences are due to the technology of the cargo handled, and the mode of transport.

Transport Terminal facilities may include:

a.     Arrival and departure lanes

b.     Docking and Parking areas for the transport vehicles.

c.     Areas for cargo - vehicle interchange, i.e. modal interchange.

d.     Holding, storage, and processing areas for the cargo.

e.     Traffic Control facilities.

f.      Terminal administration areas.

g.     Terminal Operations, Maintenance, Safety, and Security areas.

h.     Parking areas for terminal personnel, customers, and visitors.

i.       Transport Vehicle servicing areas.

j.       Others.
