A cable skidder is a four wheel drive articulating machine that drags trees or parts of trees from the forest to a landing site using a steel cable and a winch. Typically, a cable skidder has tires rather than a track, but that is not always the case. A cable skidder is basicly no different than other types of mechanical skidders except in the way that it gathers trees or logs from the forest and transfers them to the landing. A cable skidder uses a winching system with a steel cable that is approximately 100 meters long and approximately 16 mm in diameter (5/8"). The cable, called the main line has chokers attached to it. These are the parts that wrap around the tree.
