You are a part of the 2009 Shad Valley Experience! We have been very busy planning, to make your time here enjoyable and challenging. Here are the people you will be working with and a description of some of the things you can look forward to.
Mr. Ian Fogarty, our Program Co-Director, has called New Brunswick home for most of his life. He attended Mount Allison University for an Honours BSc in Organic Chemistry (CIC Award) while simultaneously competing as a nationally ranked Olympic wrestler. He also graduated from MTA with a BEd. Ian then earned a MSc in Organometallic Chemistry from New Mexico State University for developing novel anticancer radiopharmaceuticals, followed by teaching at the prestigious New Mexico Military Institute. This all lead to a research project at NASA's White Sands Test Facility. Ian has spent the last 11 years teaching public high school enriched chemistry and physics at Riverview High School. He is active provincially at developing curriculum, best practices and conducting staff development. He is the recipient of over 40 provincial and national grants to implement technology and outdoor adventure into the classroom, and most recently the recipient of a grant from the New Brunswick Department of Education Innovative Learning Fund. His greatest gift and responsibility is to his high school sweetheart and wife, Trish and twin sons, Seth and Ethan. After 2 years of working as a Shad faculty at Trent and UNB, Ian is looking forward to a great summer at Shad UNB.
Julie Roy, also our Program Co-Director, has been involved with the Shad Valley program for many years. She started as a Shad in 1996, became a PA in 2002, worked as a Program Manager for a few years and is now delighted to be Program Co- Director. She grew up in a small village in northern New Brunswick called Petit-Rocher. From there, she decided to study at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. This journey not only earned her a B.Sc., a B.Ed. and a M.Ed., she also learned English. Fascinated by how people learn mathematics and how they learn a second language, Julie ‘s teaching experiences are as diverse as teaching French to Military Officers from the Canadian Forces to teaching grade 2 students how to do math. But her true passion resides in finding out how people learn mathematics at an early age. She currently works as a Numeracy lead where she has the opportunity to work directly with children and teachers exploring new ways of learning and teaching mathematics. Julie loves to travel with friends and family. She also enjoys the outdoors activities that are available in rural New Brunswick.
