A Typical Day at Shad Valley UNB

Once Shad Valley gets officially underway you will be participating in many different and varied activities. Below are descriptions of some of them to give you an idea of the wonderful and challenging month that you have ahead of you at UNB!

There are no ‘typical’ days at Shad Valley but we thought we’d try to give you an idea of what a day might be like. The day kicks off with breakfast around 8am followed by a common lecture, and more concentrated sessions and workshops. After lunch, groups break off to partake in hands-on afternoon sessions called lab/seminars. Each day also presents opportunities for creative team projects, recreation, fitness and personal time. Evenings can include guest speakers, project time, committee work or any number of other activities. Each day ends with “Shad Late Night”, an opportunity for you to wind down, have fun and showcase your talents. It also gives Shads and staff a chance to make important announcements on what lies ahead.

On the weekends more time is allotted for trips, tours and recreational activities, including overnight excursions to the New Brunswick coastal area. The team will be arranging special topical events and discussion opportunities - some of the schedule will be kept as a surprise, but you can expect to be able to participate in the design of some of these events!

Creative Team Projects

As a participant in Shad Valley, you will be part of a creative team, made up of 8-9 Shads, to develop a new product or service based on this year’s national theme. Teams will each have a Program Assistant mentor to guide them for the month. At the end of Shad-UNB, a winning project will be selected to move on to the "RBC/Shad Entrepreneurship Cup", the national entrepreneurship competition between Shad campus teams held in Ontario this Fall. More information can be found Here.

Workshops

Throughout the month, groups of 15 Shads will participate in special workshops on a variety of topics. These workshops will allow faculty members to work with smaller groups of Shads in a participatory environment.

Lab Seminars

Some of the Lab/Seminar topics for this year include but are not limited to:

            • 3D Animation                                              • Molecular Modeling
            • The Power of Communication                • Geographic Information Systems
            • Planetary Science                                      • Myoelectric Prostheses
            • Engineering                                                • Forestry
            • Bird Watching                                             • Emergency Medicine
            • Leadership                                                 • Multimedia Production
            • Marketing                                                    • Anaesthesia

These lab/seminars allow you to learn by doing in a “hands-on” setting. This is also a great opportunity to see and explore the new research being done at UNB. You will get a chance to meet experts and professionals who are leaders in their fields.

Recreation

We believe in fit mind, fit body! An integral part of the Shad Valley experience is recreation. Some of your rec time will be devoted to individual activities and group competition, all framed within a friendly setting. Our staff has a creative and fun-filled program designed for all ability levels.

Recreation does not involve only sports! Do you enjoy performing? You will have many opportunities to exhibit your talents ... from informal "jam sessions" to Shad Late Night and the fab Shad Valley Variety Show. We also have an evening that we call Multicultural Night so bring along anything that you would like to share with the Shad gang. Don't forget to bring musical instruments and sheet music. We usually have a piano or two at our disposal.
