What is Shad Valley?

General Outline

"Shad is like a movie your friend went to see and loved. So now they want you to go see it and you're thinking it sounds kind of dumb, plus it's two and one half hours long, and movies are way too expensive in the first place. But for some reason you give in and go. The opening credits take forever and you time them. "Oh, that was a LONG three minutes." Then the actual movie starts and you don't check your watch again until the ending credits and you cannot believe how quick it went or how phenomenal a movie it was. The whole ride home in the car you have this great feeling inside you and this huge stupid grin on your face. The only sad thing is that the movie is over and after the first three minutes you never wanted it to end." (Catherine McMahon 95A)

What is Shad Valley all about?

Shad Valley is an exciting summer program designed especially for top students in Canada. The focus of the program is in three main areas:

- Excellence and Leadership
- Science and Technology
- Entrepreneurship

Shad Valley takes these three elements and combines them to form a challenging, exciting and educational experience. Shad will challenge you intellectually, physically and emotionally.

Where in the world is Shad Valley?

Shad Valley is hosted at 10 Canadian Universities each summer. The University of New Brunswick is proud to be one of the host campuses. While the Shads attend the program at UNB they will be staying in one of our residences. The lectures, workshops and guest speakers are located on campus. There are exciting tours and field trips scheduled for local and provincial sites.

When is Shad Valley?

The Shad Valley 2008 program begins on Sunday June 28 and will run until Friday July 24. Many of the Shads will then return to their sponsors to complete paid internships with their partnering organization for the rest of the summer.

P.S. If you ever need to figure out the dates for the future, here's the logic: find Labour Day (September), and count back 9 weeks (5 week work term, 4 weeks for Shad.) Shad always starts on a Sunday and ends on a Friday.
