UNB's Policies Regarding International
Health Insurance
International students or faculty members with student
or applicable visas do NOT qualify for Medicare coverage.
Health coverage for international students or faculty
members is provided through an insured plan administered
by the University.
All Full time and Part Time International students,
including students enrolled in one or more credit courses
through the College of Extended Learning's Open Access
Learning Program, will be billed for the University
International Health Insurance. Students may opt-out
of the University plan by providing proof of equivalent
medical coverage prior to the opt-out dates set below.
Students who opt-out will have an appropriate credit
applied to their account.
All students enrolled in the program MUST complete
an application form each year. This health insurance
plan is offered as single or family coverage. Please
reference the International
Student Health Insurance Application Form
(available in Arabic Chinese, and English) on the website at: http://www.unb.ca/services/financialservices/students/interhealth.htm for charges of premiums.
Students must bring in proof of insurance at the beginning
of a term in order to be eligible to not have to pay
for that term. Providing proof of insurance after the
Opt-Out dates, will only bring about credits for future
terms and will not be back dated to past terms. The
Opt-out dates are:
September 25, 2009
January 22, 2010
May 14, 2010 (Intersession), July 16, 2010 (Summer Session)
Refunds
A student must pay for the entire term even if only
a portion of the term requires coverage. If a student
pays for a year coverage in September, then leaves the
University the end of October, an 8 month
refund will be considered if no claims have been placed and the student must pay for 4 months.
Landed Immigrants
International students or faculty members with landed
immigrant status DO qualify for Medicare and hospital
benefits and must register with the Province of New
Brunswick immediately upon arrival. However, there is
a three month waiting period before Medicare will be
available so UNB's Health Insurance plan should be purchased
for the term during the waiting period.
