Ways of studying abroad
UNB Saint John gives you the many different options for getting international experience. You may try to determine the best option for you by considering the following:
- How long do you wish to be abroad? Weeks, one term or a year?
- Will you travel alone or in a group?
- Do you want to study or work abroad?
Typical student abroad timeline
First year
- Stop by the Student Abroad Office to meet the International Programs Advisor and learn about international exchanges, destinations and funding opportunities.
- Talk to your academic advisor about doing part of your degree abroad through the Student Abroad Program
- Take advantage of extra-curricular activities such as on-campus clubs, events and volunteer opportunities with an international perspective to build your resume and strengthen your application to the Student Abroad Program. It is also a great way to meet students from around the world who can give you insight into life in countries outside of Canada.
Second year
- Apply by the deadline in November. Check with the International Programs Advisor for information.
- After you have been accepted into the Student Abroad Program, you must attend pre-departure sessions which will assist you with selecting courses, inform about destination countries, the host institution and tips on staying healthy and happy overseas.
Third year
- Travel to your host institution during either the fall or the winter term, or for the entire academic year and have the experience of your life.
Fourth year
- Return to UNB Saint John to complete your final year of your degree
- Contribute to the Student Abroad Program by mentoring potential exchange candidates and by promoting the program to other students
