Financing your overseas adventures

There is numerous ways of financial assistance available to help with the cost of studying abroad.  Regardless of where you choose to study abroad, you will pay your regular UNB tuition. There are no additional academic fees to pay your host institution. Aside from your UNB tuition, you only need to budget for travel and living expenses when you study abroad.

Travel Awards

Travel Awards PartnersThe Student Abroad Program and generous external partners such as Scotiabank, Saputo, MBA alumni Daniel Arnold, and the New Brunswick Provincial Government offer financial support to UNB Saint John students.

Once you have been accepted to the Student Abroad Program, you are automatically considered for a travel award; there is no separate application.

The amount of the travel award will depend on the number of applicants, the length of time abroad and your destination. You will know the amount at least at least 4 months before you are leaving, so you have time to plan your finances.

Student Loans

During your time abroad, you continue to be registered as a full-time UNB student. This means that you can apply for a student loan for your time abroad. If you have not previously qualified for a student loan, you may consider re-submitting an application, as you can show additional expenses when living abroad.

UNB Scholarships

If you have a UNB scholarship, you may use it towards your Student Abroad experience.

Expected expenses

As you pay your regular tuition to UNB while your study abroad, you only need to plan for your travel cost to your host country and your living expenses while abroad.

Living Cost: It is a good idea to design a budget for living and school expenses such as food, textbooks and transportation, and for general spending money for sight-seeing, entertainment and souvenirs. The living costs at some our partner institutions are considerably lower than the living in Saint John.

Passport/study permit: You need to apply for a passport and in some cases pay an application fee for a study permit/residence permit in the country you will be visiting.

Travel Costs: Whenever possible, start looking for seat sales to get the best price for a plane ticket from Canada to the country of destination. You should be accepted to your host institution before making travel plans, but researching airfares will give you an idea of what to expect. There are travel agencies that specialize in student travel and can usually provide competitive prices.
