English Second Language (ESL) Support Program

What is the ESL Support Program?

  • A full-time, one semester program for students who have a good understanding of the English language but still require some additional training in specific areas of academic English in order to make the transition to full-time university study;
  • A program that combines advanced ESL courses with academic courses that students can take for credit towards their academic degrees.

Who should take the ESL Support Program?

  • Students who have an acceptance to an academic degree program at UNB Saint John and who have an IELTS (or equivalent) score of 6.0;
  • Students who have an acceptance to an academic degree program at UNB Saint John and who have successfully completed Level 5 of the College's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program.

How long is the ESL Support Program?

The ESL Support Program is a one-semester program (13-14 weeks).

How many hours of class will I have each week?

Class time is typically 12 to 15 hours per week with additional time for some tutorials. The maximum amount of time a student will spend in class each week is 20 hours.

What (and how many courses) will I take in the ESL Support Program?

Students are required to take three ESL courses and can take a maximum of two sheltered academic courses offered through Saint John College.

What is a sheltered academic course?

Sheltered courses are UNB credit courses taught by UNB professors but are delivered in a way that better meets the needs of international students who are still refining their academic English skills.

Examples of common sheltered academic courses include: Introduction to Sociology (SOCI 1001), Pre-Calculus (MATH 1863), Introduction to Microeconomics (ECON 1013) and Math for Business (MATH 1853).

When can I join the ESL Support Program?

The ESL Support Program is offered three (3) times per year. Semesters begin in September, January, and May.

What is the cost of the Program?

ESL Support Program students are considered full-time academic students at UNB Saint John and as a result, pay the same tuition fees as regular academic students.

The tuition for the Winter 2012 semester of ESL Support is approximately $6,541.  This price does not include the cost of health insurance.
