LPN Bridge Pilot Project

Common questions

Can out of Province trained LPNs apply? Can 1 year trained LPNs apply?

Unfortunately, at this point, the pilot project is only available to NBCC PN graduates from the 18 mth and the 2 year programs.

The main reason would be that when the Bridge program was being developed, the curriculum for the 18mth and 2 year program was reviewed in extreme detail and the 6 Bridge courses was designed in order to prepare the students to transition into year 3 of the nursing program. Hence the current restriction for only the 18mth and 2yr PN graduates.

Now, please understand that this is a pilot project, and upon evaluation of the first 2 intakes, the prerequisites of the program could change.

What are the math requirements for the program?

For this LPN Bridge pilot, the minimum math requirements are grade 11 Math 112 Functions and Relations with a minimum grade of 60%.

Students with a math course at a higher level that Math 112 will meet the requirements with the exception of Math 123.

As an 18mth PN grad, what are the courses/course numbers for the Adult Physical Assessment and the Introduction to Pharmacology course?

From the information I have been given, the 18mth PN grads need to supply proof of completion for:

  • NSCI 1038: Adult Physical Assessment
  • PHMC 1018: Introduction to Pharmacology

The UNB paper application does not show the LPN Bridge, what gives?

Due to the time when the LPN Bridge Pilot was announced the paper application forms were already printed. The online forms do reflect the new LPN Bridge as an option. If you are using a printed form, please ensure that you write on the form that you are applying for the Bridge.

When can I apply for the 2nd intake?

The application deadline for the 2nd intake is March 31st 2014.

Can I apply to be a UNB student and then register for the 6 Bridge courses without being part of the Bridge cohort?

The 3 of the 6 Bridge courses are restricted for students in the Bridge program. So while you are able to register for some of the courses in the Bridge program, you will not be able to register for the others and hence not able to move into the BN program.

I am still a PN student. Can I apply?

Applicants to the LPN Bridge Pilot will need to have a current LPN registration. So until you have your license, you would not qualify.

How much does it cost?

Essentially, it costs about $55 to apply. Tuition costs are $640 per course or $6800 per academic year (textbooks and supplies not included).

Is this program only for the Saint John campus? Can the Bridge be taken online?

The LPN Bridge pilot is only available on the Saint John campus and class are available in person.

If you have prior university courses, could they transfer into the Bridge program or the Nursing program?

For transfer credits, the process is that students are first reviewed for admissions. Once students are admitted, we will review any prior post‐secondary education for possible transfer credits. If a course is reviewed to still be equivalent, then it will be transferred and you will not have to complete it.

When is the Fall term? When is the Winter term?

The Fall term runs from September ‐ December. The first day of class is September 5th. The Winter term runs from January – April. The first day of class is January 6th.

When are the courses held?

The intent of the program is that students take 1 course in Fall and 5 courses in Winter.

The course for Fall is scheduled to be on Thursday evenings. The schedule for Winter has yet to be confirmed but students should plan to be a full time student.

Could I take more than 1 course in the Fall?

The short answer is ‘yes you can’. Psyc 1003 and Stats 2263 are also offered in the Fall. However, the program is designed so that there are seats reserved for the Bridge students in the intended semester.

If I completed the 6 Bridge courses and meet the entrance requirements (GPA of 3.0; no course lower than a grade of C), do I still have to compete for seats to enter 3rd year of the BN program?

No, as part of the LPN Bridge cohort, once you complete the 6 Bridge courses with the required minimum academic grades, you will have a seat in the 3rd year of the BN program.

How are students selected?

As the Bridge program attempts to transition students into the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree, regulations for the BN applies. Hence, for this LPN Bridge pilot, admission decisions will be based on grades.

When I get accepted, how do I select and register for my courses?

Upon admissions, we will have an advising session with the accepted students and we will guide you through the steps of registering for courses and orientating you to university.
