Math Placement Test (MPT)
What is the MPT?
The purpose of the Math Placement Test is to ensure that students have a realistic chance at success in Math 1003 - Intro to Calculus I based on their background. The MPT is only required for Math 1003.
When is the next MPT?
April 30, 11am, Hazen Hall Lecture Theatre - note this is only recommended for students about to take Math 1003 in the summer term for the first time.
PLEASE NOTE
- Arrive early.
- Bring your UNB student number.
- Calculators are not permitted at the MPT.
Do I have an exemption from the MPT?
The MPT is only required for students planning on taking Math 1003 Calculus I.
If you know that you have been exempted from writing the MPT then please do not write the test.
You may check to see if your student ID number is on the exemption list.
Possible exemptions:
- You earned at least 70% on a special province-wide Math122 or Math120 exam written in your high school in the preceding academic year, and your teacher notified UNB.*
- You passed UNB's Calculus Challenge Exam.*
- Your UNB transcript shows pass (C or better) in any UNB MATH course.
- Your UNB transcript shows that you once failed MATH1003.
*Students who satisfy either of the first two exemption criteria and who have registered at UNB by mid August will receive email confirmation of their exemption. Emails will be sent in late August to your UNB email account. If you are not sure about whether you have to write the MPT then WRITE THE TEST. Exemptions will be honoured.
All students are permitted two attempts at the Math Placement Test.
How can I prepare for the MPT?
The M.P.T. will be used to assess your mathematical knowledge and skills in various high school topics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc. but excluding calculus. UNBSJ offers resources to assist with understanding and preparing for first year calculus as well as MPT sample questions.
Where can I find my MPT results?
Results will be posted outside the Math Dept offices on the 2nd floor of KC Irving Hall. They will also be posted outside of the Science/Math Help Centre in the Klohn Commons building. Based on your test score results, and the regulations set out by the UNBSJ Mathematics department, you will be directed to take one of the following: MATH 1003 Introduction to Calculus I (passing score) or Math 1863 Precalculus Math (non passing score).
