Faculty to be honoured
Two distinguished UNB Saint John faculty will be honoured with the receipt of the Professor Emeritus and Dr. Allan P. Stuart Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Jack Terhune, who was awarded a President's Medal in 2010, will join the ranks of professor emeritus, while Louis Bélanger will receive the Dr. Allan P. Stuart Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Jack Terhune
Dr. Terhune's 30 plus years of service to UNB and the diverse range of contributions he has made to, not just the Saint John campus but UNB as a whole, exemplifies the spirit of this recognition.
His expertise in graduate studies and his wealth of institutional knowledge made him a perfect choice to co-chair for President Campbell’s Strategic Planning Initiative.
Dr. Terhune has served in numerous administrative capacities and, in all cases, exhibited a steady and effective leadership. Some of his more notable roles were as Chair of the Biology Department from 1992-1997, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for five years, and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering in 2007/08.
Passionate about sharing research, Dr. Terhune is heavily involved in the community through UNB Saint John's science summer camps, Fundy Science Fair, CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks and National Geographic Kids.
The professor emeritus distinction is awarded only to retired faculty members. Criteria for the honorary rank include teaching performance of exceptional merit, extensive research and publication of unusually high quality, creative contributions to the administration and development of the university, and a record of professional conduct that indicates fair and ethical treatment of students and other members of the academic community.
Louis Bélanger
Dr. Louis Bélanger has consistently received excellent responses on his Student Opinion Surveys since starting with the Faculty of Arts at UNB Saint John in 1990.
Dedicated to students' success, Dr. Bélanger received the Departmental Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006. Imparting a love for the French language to his students, Dr. Bélanger has created over a dozen courses addressing cultural expressions of the Québécois, Acadian and Franco-Ontarian civilizations.
With the steadfast belief that collaboration is crucial to the learning experience, he launched an annual event with UNB, Saint Thomas University and the Canada Council to provide a venue for authors and students to exchange ideas on their published works. To date, more than 20 French Canadian authors have met with students, faculty and the community since its inception in 1991.
The Dr. Allan P. Stuart Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes outstanding teaching on the basis of nominations from students and faculty members at UNB. The award is named in honour of Allan Stuart, a respected professor of chemistry from 1946 to 1973 and one of the first recipients of an excellence in teaching award at the university.
