Study the real thing
Where better to learn about hospitality and tourism than in the city that remains one of the top tourism destinations in the Maritimes.
In addition to working on class projects and case studies based on local businesses and their strategies, you can also gain experience either on your own time or through our accredited co-op program.
The Bachelor of Applied Management Hospitality & Tourism (BAMHT) is also unique because of Saint John’s distinctive historic and geographic significance (read the latest BAMHT newsletter).
As the oldest incorporated city in Canada Saint John boasts the largest collection of Victorian architecture outside of the UK, making it an ideal location for heritage tourism. Its location on the Bay of Fundy also makes it an attractive port-of-call for the growing cruise ship industry and the perfect place for eco-tourism operations., such as whale watching and sea kayaking.
Tourism and hospitality is a vibrant and growing industry sector employing about 1.65 million workers in food and beverage, recreation, accommodation and travel services. Since only 10 per cent of the tourism labour force has a university degree, you can increase your success in this industry by completing your degree.
Options
To meet the demands of the growing Tourism and Hospitality industry, the University of New Brunswick Saint John offers a four-year BAMT. This degree is unique because students graduate with two key industry credentials: a certificate and a degree (if entering from high school); a diploma and a degree (if entering from college). We also have great relationships with our college partners that allow our students to study at another academic institution.
If you are coming to us with a diploma, you will add to your existing experience and applied skills, furthering your knowledge and expertise about planning and management of tourism enterprises and programs while studying different forms of tourism including sustainable, international, natural area, cruise, resort, sacred site and heritage tourism.
With your degree you are quipped to enter the tourism industry in areas as varied as hotel management, tourism research, park management, travel writing, or continue with hospitality tourism studies at the Masters level.
Masters and Doctorates in interdisciplinary studies
Hospitality and tourism does not offer its own degrees but rather provides the opportunity for students to pursue individualized and innovative interdisciplinary programs.
These programs prepare students for careers requiring creative thinking and development of innovative responses to complex 21st Century problems.
Students work with a supervisory team to design an appropriate program. Courses may be drawn from any faculty or department on campus and occasionally from other Universities. In Hospitality and Tourism it is preferred that the chosen program leads to a applied thesis.
Six courses plus a thesis are required for a masters and doctoral program are negotiable.
