Earn an education degree with your BA

Graduate with two degrees through our concurrent Bachelor of Arts (BA) / Bachelor of Education (BEd) program.

The BA/BEd at UNB Saint John attracts students who want to accomplish two goals: receive the training and skills required to become an elementary school teacher (Kindergarten to grade five) and acquire a Bachelor of Arts (BA), all at the same time.

Students in their first or second year of a BA degree are eligible to apply, but there is a special application process for the program. Applications are normally completed and submitted in January of year one in your BA degree.

Clear path to a teaching career

Graduates are automatically qualified for a certificate Level 5 teaching license in New Brunswick, which is recognized by other Canadian provinces, most U.S. states and several other countries.

Our hands-on learning means:

  • 30 hours of service learning at a school in the community
  • One week observation in a classroom setting
  • A full-time, 15 week practicum (internship) at a public school
  • Tutoring opportunities at local schools

Prepare for a leadership role in education

Our graduates are ready to begin their professional career and broaden and deepen their professional expertise through continuing study. Students acquire the knowledge, ethical standards, skills, dispositions, and flexibility needed to address current problems in education both creatively and effectively and to think critically about professional practice.

Applying to the BA/BEd

Students normally apply at the end of year one of the BA degree. The application committee will consider:

  • Previous experience with children or youth
  • Your university cumulative grade point average (CGPA), which must be equal-to or greater-than 2.7 (B- average)
  • Personal statement of intent and purpose in teaching
  • Reference letters
