University of Vermont

The University of Vermont, a public university founded in 1791, is one of the oldest universities in the U.S. Known by most as "UVM," it is a major research institution that has faculty-student relationships most commonly found in a small liberal arts college.

The university is home to 10,000 undergraduates in 7 schools and colleges, 1,500 graduate students in 75 graduate programs, 460 medical students and 1,300 full- and part-time faculty. It hosts international students from more than 50 countries. There are more than 100 student organizations, including a nationally-ranked debate team, student-run newspaper, radio and television stations, rescue squad, and legal services.

UVM consistently ranks among the highest quality public universities in the nation, and has recognized strengths in areas of environment, health, and food systems. The University has strong international studies programs, including programs in Global Studies, Canadian Studies, and Latin American Studies, among others.

Burlington, Vermont

The University is located in Burlington, Vermont, a small city that is perennially voted one of America's most exciting and livable cities. It is nestled in a location of stunning natural beauty, on the shores of Lake Champlain between the Adirondack and the Green mountain ranges.

As a result of its location, it is home to many outdoor and winter sports enthusiasts and industries. The historic character, thriving arts and music scenes, and small-scale of Burlington - it has only 40,000 inhabitants, even though it is Vermont's largest city - make it one of the state's central tourist destinations. Also, as the state's primary urban center, volunteer and service learning opportunities in fields like government, environment, and education abound.
