Dr. Gregory Kealey, Provost & Vice-President (Research)

Greg Kealey, VP Research

Dr. Gregory Kealey has devoted his life to making a difference in Atlantic Canada, putting his expertise in Canadian social and labour history to good use.

Dr. Kealey has held the position of Vice-President (Research) at UNB since Dec. 1, 2001, with his second term commencing on July 1, 2006. On July 1, 2008, Dr. Kealey was also appointed University Provost.

Dr. Kealey has lived in Atlantic Canada for more than half his life.  He has a well-developed sense of the region's history, and he strongly believes in the role of Atlantic universities in promoting both economic and social development. At UNB, Dr. Kealey is drawing on his knowledge and experience to encourage research initiatives, connect researchers with larger national and international communities, and increase research funding from government, civil society and industry.

In terms of scholarship, Dr. Kealey has made a number of wide-ranging contributions. He began his own education at the University of Toronto, where he earned a BA in modern history in 1970. He completed his Masters and PhD at the University of Rochester in 1971 and 1977, respectively.

Before joining UNB, Dr. Kealey taught at Dalhousie University, and following that, he joined Memorial University's history department in 1981. In 1992, Dr. Kealey received the designation of University Research Professor at Memorial, a title recognizing the university's most successful researchers.

Dr. Kealey was appointed Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Memorial in 1997. Dr. Kealey served as founding editor of Labour/Le Travail for 21 years and is still on its editorial board. He is general editor of the Canadian Social History Series, which has over 40 volumes published to date and is now housed at the University of Toronto Press.

He has published four books, edited 26 others, written 22 chapters for books, published 32 articles in refereed journals with 20 articles anthologized, and delivered over 200 papers and commentaries.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Kealey has received numerous grants, fellowships, prizes and appointments, including visiting professorships and being named fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 1983 and of the Royal Society of Canada in 1999. 

Dr. Kealey has also held a number of board positions, including President of both the Canadian Historical Association and the Social Science Federation of Canada. He has also been acting co-president of the Humanities and Social Science Federation of Canada. 

In March 2005, Dr. Kealey was appointed to the governing body of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). While on Council, he served on SSHRC's Executive Committee. Dr. Kealey also sits on the board of the Canadian Knowledge Research Network and is Chair of its Governance Committee.

Dr. Kealey is also an important member of many UNB organizations, chairing the advisory boards of the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy (CRISP), the Canadian Rivers Institute (CRI), the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBME), and the Chronic Illness Research Institute (CIRI).

He is an invaluable member of the community as well, acting as President of Knowledge Park Inc, a cluster of knowledge-based businesses, from 2002-2011. Dr. Kealey also serves or has served on the boards of AARMS, ACEnet, BioAtlantech, Canadian Research Knowledge Network, Huntsman Marine Science Centre, International Aquaculture Innovation Centre, Kings Landing, Knowledge Park Inc, Muriel McQueen Ferguson Centre for Family Violence Research, New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF), New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF), New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council, Populomix Cancer Research Institute, and Springboard Atlantic.
