Information for faculty applying to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
The information presented here is intended to provide additional information not found on the SSHRC website and advice based on past experience. Please refer to the SSHRC website (http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/) for program descriptions and competition guidelines, application forms and procedures, detailed attachment instructions, and deadlines.
Suggestion: Count back five months from your application agency deadline and use this chart to plan the preparatory activities for all of your SSHRC applications.
Timeline for preparing SSHRC applications:
Month 1 |
- Think of interesting projects
- Start literature review
- Discuss your ideas with others

Month 2 |
- Read the guidelines and instructions
- Write an initial draft using ORS templates (this can take a month of intensive work)
- Start to formulate budget
- Select suggested assessors—choose carefully and strategically

Month 3 |
- Seek constructive feedback from colleagues and mentors
- Revise based on feedback
|
Month 4 |
- Revise, revise, revise!
- Fill out online forms
- Put together the next-to-final version, complete with references and figures
- Ask colleagues and mentors to review

Month 5 |
- Prepare final version, incorporating all feedback
- Proofread and spell check
- Check format to ensure adherence to guidelines (margins, font size, page limits)
- Make sure all sections of the forms are complete (verify in the SSHRC online system)
- Email all application components to ORS for review by the internal deadline
- Implement ORS revisions
- Deliver hard copy requirements to ORS, including any required signatures from your Chair and/or Dean
