Salaries and Pay for Student Research Assistants
If you are paying a graduate student on a stipend basis (fixed amount), you should determine the appropriate competitive rate for your faculty. If you are paying graduate students based on an hourly rate, please contact the School of Graduate Studies for mandatory hourly rates for graduate student assistants. Transcription Costs
A rule of thumb for transcription time is 6 hours per 1 hour of an interview. Transcribers receive an hourly rate. Don't forget to include the cost of digital audio recorders if required.

Computer Purchases
ITS maintains a website with recommended and in stock computer configurations. Contact ITS for more information. If these stock computers suit your needs, you can use the price ITS gives you. If you have specific computer needs, you will need to obtain a quote from ITS.

Travel Expenses
Financial Services maintains a UNB price list for vehicle rentals for both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. These prices apply only if you are paying through a UNB purchase order or using the UNB AMEX Corporate Card.

Financial Services specifies limits for meal expenses and mileage. These amounts are found on the Travel Expense Claim Form.

For Canadian hotels, a list of CAUBO rates for faculty members and staff is available. Contact ORS for more details.

If you will be traveling outside Canada and the USA and are unsure of the costs of travel at your destination, the Treasury Board of Canada has an extensive list of international cities and the costs of meals and incidentals covered for federal government employees. These amounts should be used as a guide only for budgeting purposes - check with Research Financial Services regarding the amounts eligible for reimbursement from a research grant account for foreign travel.

Release Time Stipends (RTS)

Applicants to SSHRC research grants programs cannot request a SSHRC/university co-funded Research Time Stipend (RTS). However, all RTSs awarded prior to March 31, 2009, will be honoured to completion of the applicable grant.
