Course DescriptionStream Restoration Workshop, Dr Newbury

The 3 day workshop consists of 6 half-day lectures and a half-day field trip to a local stream restoration project.

Three lectures deal with fluvial processes and hydraulics with a special emphasis on aquatic habitats, three lectures deal with designing pools and riffles, meanders, and fish passage works. The final lectures illustrate the application of HEC-RAS, CHUTE and FishXing programs as they apply to two trout and salmon project designs.

All lecture materials are contained in a 200+ page project case book (Newbury 2010) with 27 completed projects and studies. An attached CD contains the design programs and the sample project files.

The workshop is designed for those with an interest in stream restoration, design, and monitoring. Participants will receive instruction in fluvial hydrology, ecological considerations, restoration design and technical details, and aquatic monitoring and assessment. The workshop will be a combination of lecture and field components. A guided tour of multiple completed projects within the Okanagan River system is included.

The lectures and handbook are designed for engineers, biologists, and other earth Dickson Brook Lecture & Tour, Fundy Park, NB, October 2010scientists in government, university, and environmental consulting who are working directly in the disciplines presented or are responsible for planning, assessing, and approving restoration project.

Testimonial: "The CRI Stream Restoration Course brings together the river biology and channel engineering aspects of stream restoration to provide a wealth of information in an understandable form for effective design of fish habitat." D. Beach, Fisheries and Oceans, Canada.
