My research consists of thermal mapping of New Brunswick rivers, with a focus on the Cains river. Infra-red imagery will be used to map river habitat and locate thermal refugia for Brook Trout and Atlantic Salmon. I will investigate if the surface temperature provided by the infra-red sensor is an accurate representation of the vertical water column temperature. For example, will the cold water coming from groundwater springs be picked up on the surface by the infra-red sensor? Facing changes to the climate, a continuing forest industry and clearcutting near rivers, we must gain an understanding of the cold-water habitat in order to preserve trout and salmon in these remote rivers of New Brunswick.
