CNER History
In The Beginning
The Centre for Nuclear Energy Research (CNER) was established as a non-profit research and development company operated as a partnership by the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and the New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council (RPC). CNER was formed in 1992 and has worked closely with UNB and other International Universities, particularly students from The Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, graduates with engineering degrees. NB Power and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) have also been involved with CNER from inception on a variety of projects.
AECL has been an important part of CNER since our establishment. There has always been AECL representation on CNER’s Board of Directors as well as AECL employees integrated in the CNER office. This integrated environment has allowed both CNER and AECL to leverage unique opportunities that otherwise may not have transpired.
Developing New Products and Partnerships
In 2002, CNER was awarded a 5 year project funded by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency's (ACOA), Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF). The project was titled “The Process System Corrosion Mitigation Technology Project”. As a result of this project, CNER developed two new corrosion monitors - the ECPro™ and the HEPro™.
In 2008, CNER formed a partnership with NB Power called the Learning Partnership. This partnership initiative was created to enhance nuclear industry preparedness for students through NB Power's Employee Growth and Evolution Strategy.
In December 2010, CNER was awarded another 3.5 year AIF project funded by Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The project entitled “Smart Instrumentation for the Energy Sector” involves the design, development and industrial field demonstrations on two novel condition monitors.
Also in December 2010, CNER was reorganized as a research institute within UNB. The new institute has as its foundation the corporation's history, continued client relationships and has retained the expertise of its personnel. As a research institute within the university, CNER can now leverage a broader array of university researchers' expertise and services.
