Northern Gannet nesting on Machias Seal Island 2016

The first ever record of Northern Gannet nesting on the island was in 2012, when an egg was laid in a nest at the south end, but was lost to gull predation a week later.

This year there are two nests, one near the coast on the west side, the other near the visitor blinds; in this second one, crew leader Stefanie Collar reported an egg on 15 June. Northern Gannet pair with single egg on MSI in 2016.

Watch this space to see if the birds can ward off hungry gulls and ravens, which are taking a considerable toll of auk eggs this summer.
