CENTRE FOR FINANCIAL STUDIES PARTNERS WITH LEESIDE CAPITAL

January 5, 2010
UNB News Release: 10-004
Natalie Montgomery, Communication Officer (506) 453-4990

The University of New Brunswick’s Centre for Financial Studies has created a new partnership with LeeSide Capital Management Inc. (www.LeeSideCapital.com ).

As LeeSide grows, it will need more employees, and a partnership with UNB will help the company to prepare future employees. LeeSide will assist the centre with readying students for various university business competitions; providing input on how to initiate the Hugh Seeley International Fund, where students are able to invest in foreign securities; and speaking at various events.

Glenn Cleland, founding director of the centre is excited about the opportunity to partner with LeeSide Capital.

“I have known the principals for years,” said Prof. Cleland. “I respect their capital market acumen given their proven track record and admire their overall professionalism. I truly believe, with their guidance, that we can take the centre to another level.”

Based in Halifax, N.S., and with an office in Saint John, N.B., LeeSide is led by three money management experts with a track record that spans more than 20 years. The team of Robert McKim, CFA; George Loughery, CFA; and Don Wishart, CFA have a successful history of working together and managing clients’ assets that total more than $10 billion. With a risk-averse approach to investment and a philosophy that patience and continuous research are fundamental steps to success, LeeSide is an investment management boutique offering unique service for institutional and private investors.

“My colleagues and I are all from New Brunswick and we look forward to a close collaboration with the UNB Centre for Financial Studies,” said Mr. McKim. “Having had successful careers in the past, this partnership is an important way for us to give back by way of sharing our expertise with the next generation of investment professionals.”

Mr. McKim is the architect of LeeSide’s signature investment philosophy and style, which is grounded in the purchase of high quality equities and holding them for the long-term. He was the executive-in- residence for the Centre for Financial Studies in 2008. During the height of the financial crisis in the fall of 2008, Mr. McKim delivered an address to the Fredericton public that asked ‘How’s Your Appetite For Investment Risk Now?’

UNB’s Centre for Financial Studies is located in the Faculty of Business Administration. The mission of the centre is to create investment expertise in the Atlantic region through business and academic partnerships. New Brunswick Investment Management Corporation was the original partner, creating the Student Investment Fund that allows students real money to invest in the capital markets. Other partners with the centre include RBC Financial Group, TD Securities, TMX Group and Phillips Hager and North. CPMS, Applied Financial Group and Morningstar are also partners allowing students access to their proprietary investment software.
