Dan Tanaka, Communications & Public Affairs Manager (506) 648-5697

Daryl Morrison, director of educational initiatives, New Brunswick, is this year's recipient of the G. Forbes Elliot Award for Educational Leadership, valued at $5,000. This annual University of New Brunswick award was established in 1994 as a bequest of the late Dr. Elliot, a prominent Canadian educator, Saint John resident, and the first Vice-President of the University of New Brunswick in Saint John.

Morrison has been a teacher, supervisor and director in education for the province of New Brunswick for many years, and through this work he has distinguished himself in education leadership. "Mr. Morrison exemplifies the ideals of G. Forbes Elliot in showing strong leadership skills in education," says selection committee chair Paul-Emile Chiasson. "Daryl has been involved in leadership development, strategic planning for improvements on literacy and curriculum in district 17 for many years. He has designed in-services for participants in leadership programs and has spent many years as a team leader with organizational and curricular teams. The selection committee unanimously decided that his great experience and contribution to education made him an ideal candidate."

A University of New Brunswick alumnus, Morrison plans to complete his PhD from the University of New Brunswick. He has been granted an educational leave to pursue full-time studies in the fall of 2009.

To be eligible for this award, an applicant must have taught a minimum of five years in the public schools of New Brunswick, have demonstrated leadership in the field of education and plan to pursue graduates studies in education at the University of New Brunswick.
