As a result of a generous gift from alumnus Richard J. Currie, the University of New Brunswick has awarded four $50,000 Currie Undergraduate Scholarships over four years of study beginning September 2009.
Two recipients have received the Currie Undergraduate Scholarship in Engineering: Travis Payne of Bathurst, N.B., who is graduating from Bathurst High School, and Michelle Plante of Riverview, N.B., graduating from Riverview High School. Mr. Payne and Ms. Plante will be studying in UNB’s engineering programs.
Two recipients have also received the Currie Undergraduate Scholarship: Deidre Allaby of Woodstock, N.B., who is graduating from Woodstock High School, and Keillor Steeves of Moncton, N.B., graduating from Harrison Trimble High School. They will be studying in UNB’s science and kinesiology programs respectively.
The four students selected demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, significant leadership in their schools and communities, and the ability to overcome challenges in their lives.
The Currie Undergraduate Scholarship was established by Richard J. Currie, O.C., one of Canada’s most accomplished business leaders, who was installed as chancellor of the University of New Brunswick in May 2003.
Dr. Currie, who was a Beaverbrook Scholar at UNB, is a native of Saint John and past chairman of BCE Inc. He is a member of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame, and, in recognition of his contributions as a business leader, volunteer and philanthropist, was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2004.
The Currie Undergraduate Scholarships are offered each year to students entering a degree program at UNB from a high school in any of the four Atlantic Provinces. Each $50,000 scholarship is provided by UNB’s Chancellor, Dr. Richard J. Currie, O.C., to support the education of future leaders. For more information, see www.unb.ca/scholarships.
The university and its donors are pleased to provide financial support to students through the granting of scholarships. For information about contributing to a UNB scholarship program, please contact the Office of Development and Donor Relations at 1- 877-UNB GIVE (862-4483).
