Four political science students at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John have set their sights on some ambitious goals. They want to make a difference in the lives of others.

Thanks to their high academic performance and financial support from the Sandra Irving Scholarships, they’re well on their way.

Lori Carle, Diane Govindsamy, Andre Rochon and Amanda Sadleir have each been awarded a $5,000 Sandra Irving Scholarship, which have been given each year by the political science alumnus since 1996.

“These scholarships will help each of these outstanding students to further pursue their dreams and ambitions,” said Don Desserud, Chair of the Sandra Irving Scholarship selection committee. “Typically, one Sandra Irving Scholarship is awarded annually, but our donor felt that four were merited this year based on the accomplishments of our students.”

Lori Carle is a local broadcaster, wife, and proud mother of two young sons. A fourth-year student, Lori wants to pursue a career in education, following completion of her Bachelor of Arts.

She would like to pass along her own love of learning to a new generation of student while helping them to understand the practical applications of what they are studying.

A commitment to the development of the whole student will ultimately benefit communities and the Sandra Irving scholarship will help her to pursue this dream.

Diane Govindsamy is a wife, mother and honours student who will focus her research on the Black Loyalists of New Brunswick, a group whose role in our history and society has been sometimes overlooked. A proud New Brunswicker, Diane hopes to apply her education in the area of policy at the provincial level following completion of a Master’s degree.

Andre Rochon wants to experience humanitarian work and global cultures first hand before he embarks on a path that will take him through law school.

With the Sandra Irving Scholarship to help support his studies, he plans to travel to Swaziland in 2010 to get the first-hand cultural experience that will help support his legal aspirations in international or criminal law.

Amanda Sadleir is committed to the practice of international human rights. Following completion of her degree, she plans to either pursue a master’s degree, or enter law school with a focus on human rights, specifically for women and children.

Amanda hopes to be a voice for those who may not be given the chance to use their own, and this award will support that ambition.

The Sandra Irving Scholarship is awarded annually to political science students at UNB Saint John. The selection committee looks at academic standing, career aspirations and a personal statement in making their decision. The $5,000 scholarship is named for the donor, a UNB Saint John political science graduate, who created the award.

Students at UNB Saint John are generously supported by a number of scholarships and bursaries like the Sandra Irving Scholarship. For more information on scholarships and bursaries, visit www.unb.ca/scholarships.
