The achievements of students and professors in the faculty of computer science at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton were recognized at banquet last month.

A total of $230,000 in awards and scholarships were announced at the ceremony.

Ten outstanding graduate students received nearly $116,000 in scholarships. Entrance scholarships worth $73,000 were presented to 35 first-year students in the bachelor's program and slightly more than $45,000 in scholarships were awarded to 28 continuing bachelor's students. Seventy-three dean's list students were also recognized.

Professor Rod Cooper received the 2006 faculty of computer science Excellence in Teaching Award. Established in 2001 by computer science students, it recognizes professors with an outstanding teaching record. Dr. Cooper joined the computer science faculty in 1975 and is now assistant dean. He is also cross-appointed to the department of chemistry in the faculty of science.

UNB computer science alumnus Trevor Cory of CGI, an end-to-end IT and business company with 100 offices in 16 countries, offered a closing address that reminded the students of the breadth of possibilities awaiting them following graduation and encouraged them to strive towards higher and higher achievements.

More than 125 invited guests attended the formal dinner and awards ceremony sponsored by local firms, universities and government agencies.
