BARRY HOYT STUDENT LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

The 2006 Barry Hoyt Student Leadership Award has been presented to UNB Saint John student Koorosh Vahabi. The announcement was made during the university’s annual commencement ceremony the evening of September 5, 2006. Presented by Barry’s mother, Mrs. Margaret Hoyt, in memory of her son’s active involvement at UNB Saint John, the award recognizes a student leader who has made an outstanding contribution to student life and school spirit. Mr. Vahabi was unable to attend the ceremony.

Mr. Vahabi is a fourth year Business Administration student who qualified for the annual award by distinguishing himself through academic achievement, and social and political leadership. In addition to his excelling at his studies, Koorosh has been involved with the World University Services of Canada - UNB Saint John and also been an Executive Member of the Muslim Student Association.

Koorosh is dedicated to raising money for worthy causes, demonstrated by his choice to ride a bicycle from Saint John to Moncton to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina. He also organized a t-shirt rally and soccer tournament to raise money for Trachoma victims.

“Koorosh is a conscientious young man who demonstrates a keen interest in leading others and participating in charitable causes,” said Kathryn Hamer, Vice-President, UNB Saint John. “Barry Hoyt’s spirit of leadership is still alive at UNB Saint John, and through this scholarship we thank the Hoyt family for helping other students keep that spirit going”.
