UNB'S FACULTY OF NURSING WELCOMES NEW DEAN

September 18, 2006
UNB Fredericton News Release: D709
Natalie Montgomery, Communication Officer (506) 453-4990

The faculty of nursing at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton has a new dean. Janice Thompson began her five-year term as dean on Aug. 1.

"UNB Fredericton is fortunate to have Dr. Thompson as its dean of nursing," said Angelo Belcastro, vice-president Fredericton (academic). "She brings a unique blend of academic, professional and administrative skills necessary to continue on with the tradition of high quality nursing education and research at UNBF."

Dr. Thompson came to UNB from the University of Southern Maine in Portland where she was a professor of nursing and director of the University Honors Program.

Dr. Thompson received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Iowa. She obtained a doctoral degree in nursing from the University of Utah.

She has authored numerous articles, contributed chapters in several academic books, served as principal investigator or project director on several funded grants, supervised undergraduate, interdisciplinary thesis students, and mentored masters and doctoral students in nursing.

Dr. Thompson's teaching interests include interdisciplinary course development within the framework of community based action research. Her research has ranged from work in critical social theory to the examination of postcolonial commitments in transcultural nursing.
