UNB Fredericton News Release: D691
Natalie Montgomery, Communication Officer (506) 453-4990
The goal of bringing prominent archaeologists to lecture in the province has resulted in the creation of a New Brunswick chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).
The AIA New Brunswick chapter, spearheaded by a group of faculty and staff from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, is a first for Atlantic Canada.
Founded in 1879, the AIA is the world’s largest archaeological organization with more than 9,000 members comprising a unique blend of professionals, students and enthusiasts. The society’s mandate is to preserve and protect the world’s archaeological heritage.
Each year, the AIA sends three speakers to each of its more than 100 chapters across North America. By establishing a chapter in New Brunswick, archaeological enthusiasts from across Atlantic Canada will be able to hear from some of the foremost researchers in the field.
In order to receive its charter, the AIA New Brunswick chapter needs 50 members and once it has at least 25 members, the first guest speaker will be assigned.
Membership forms are available at www.archaeological.org or by contacting one of the following people: Maria Papaioannou at mariap@unb.ca or 458-7508; David Black at dwblack@unb.ca or 458-7045; Susan Blair at sblair@unb.ca or 453-4655; or Leanne Wells at lwells@unb.ca or 447-3075.
