Background
Internationally, many digital library projects have focused on creating computer accessible collections of historic and cultural materials to support scholarship in the humanities. Once in digital form, the ability to search and interact with the content permits powerful analysis and comparison and is a key foundation for scholarship. The first presentation will provide an overview of the historic development of Digital Libraries from pioneering efforts such as the Library of Congress American Memory project of the 1990s to current efforts.
An overview of topics includes:
Definitions and initial developments
Initial projects and capabilities
Collateral factors for development
Types of Digital Library projects
Examples of interfaces and design
Standards initiatives
Funding and current projects
Case Study - Development of a Demonstration Digital Library
Application of organizational strategies from digital traditional library collections to interactive scientific data
-to enhance and extend research
-model and visualize
-simulate
-data mine, recognize patterns and relationships
