Spending wisely

Money is a top concern for just about all university students. They have to pay for school and most want to have some fun too. Here are a few suggestions to help you cut down on spending and create some breathing room in your budget.

Groceries

One of the easiest ways to maintain your food budget is to purchase a meal plan. Since you pay up front you don't have to worry about spending on a weekly basis.

If you do choose to buy your own groceries there are some easy ways to save:

  • Never shop when you're hungry
  • Buy in bulk when something is on sale
  • Make a list and stick to it
  • Buy store brand products
  • Pack snacks and bring them to school

Entertainment

There are plenty of fun activities in both Fredericton and Saint John that are totally free.

Investigate your city and find some inexpensive things to do. For example, Saint John's Rockwood Park and Fredericton's Odell Park are gorgeous, free, and full of wildlife and beautiful hiking paths.

If you're a person who enjoys going to the movies start attending some of the many free movie nights put on by UNB's clubs and societies. Regular film screenings take place throughout the week, just check out your eServices for dates and times.

The Student Union and Students' Representative Council also hold numerous events throughout the year, many of which are free as long as you have your student ID.

Clothing

Both Fredericton and Saint John have a great selection of shops and boutiques including a variety of thrift stores that sell unique vintage things as well as modern designer clothes. Do some research and check them out-- you'll save a lot of money and develop your own creative look.

Transportation

A great way to save on transportation is to simply live on campus. Residences are close to all the amenities you'd need.

If you commute, consider walking or taking public transit more often. Both are far better for the environment and more cost effective.  You can get anywhere you need to go on the bus, and it only costs a couple of dollars. Both Saint John and Fredericton transit have city-wide routes.

Textbooks

After tuition, a major cost associated with university is textbooks. Costs can be cut in this area by attending student organized book sales like the SU/SRC Book Buy and Sell.

The university bookstores have a large selection of used books as well.
