Desire2Learn Version 10 Upgrade FAQ's

1) Why is UNB upgrading to the new version of D2L?

The learning management committee felt it was important to upgrade to the latest version of D2L so students and instructors could take advantage of the many great new features and system upgrades within D2L version 10. For a list of all these great new features, please visit : What's New in Desire2Learn Version 10.

2) Will I have to learn how to use the entire system again?

No. This upgrade just updates the interface and the content area, making it easier for you add content and build your course. If you’ve previously created quizzes, dropbox, discussions, etc, then you’ll continue to do so the way you’ve done in previous courses. You will, however, have to learn the new “Content” tool. We will have plenty of .pdf and video guides available on our www.unb.ca/d2l site for you, plus, you can contact d2l@unb.ca if you have any issues or questions.

3) Do I have to upgrade, or, can I just use the old version of D2L?

Yes, this is a system upgrade and therefore everyone will have to use the new version of D2L.

4) Will there be any training sessions on how to use the new version of Desire2Learn?

Yes, we will have plenty of training sessions starting late in the summer and well into the fall term. For a complete list of training session times/locations, please visit : http://www.unb.ca/learningresources/workshops.html

We will also have some video and pdf guides available on our http://www.unb.ca/d2l site in advance of the upgrade.

 5) What will happen to my previous/current courses when the upgrade happens?

This upgrade will do nothing to affect what you’ve previously done in the learning environment. So, all of the previous items in your courses (Content, Quizzes, Discussions, Grades, Groups, etc) will remain in tact. The courses will just be updated to reflect the new look/interface.  So, if you taught a course in 2013 winter or 2012 fall, it will still be there under your “My Home” area where it was previously.

6) Will I be able to copy content from my previous courses to the ones I’ll be teaching in the fall 2013/winter 2014?

Yes, you will be able to copy any of your previous courses into your current or upcoming courses and they’ll share the same structure that your previous courses did.  What you can do to update your syllabus is just take the current version from your computer and drag and drop (In Firefox or Chrome) over the previous, 2012 Fall or 2013 Winter version (or any other past version of the syllabus) and it’ll automatically update to the current version for you.

7) Where can I read about all of the changes to D2L in version 10.2?

You can do a google search for D2L version 10.2 and will be able to find some documentation, or, you can get official documentation by going to the Desire2Learn Community page and clicking on the “documentation and help” link. If you don’t have an account with the Desire2Learn community page you can easily register here : http://community.desire2learn.com/enroll.aspEnrolling in the D2L Community will also give you access to the latest D2L news and will give you access to a client wide discussion forum where you can ask questions or receive answers to some of the most frequently asked questions in D2L.
