Student Email Upgrade

On July 7, UNB student, alumni and retiree email is being migrated from Microsoft Live@edu to Office 365, Microsoft’s latest online email service.

As a result, your email will be unavailable for up to 24 hours beginning on July 7 at 8 p.m.

Why are we doing this?

Microsoft has made this a mandatory upgrade with a deadline for all Live@edu customers to move to their new Office 365 email by September 2013.

Who is being migrated?

All students, alumni and retirees currently in the Live@edu environment will be migrated to Office 365.

What are the benefits?

Office 365 will allow ITS to introduce new, exciting IT services (in 2014) to students for enriched communication between you and other UNB faculty, staff and students with Lync, as well as improved collaboration tools within this same group through SharePoint–check out what Sony and Telus are doing with SharePoint.

Will I lose access to my email or SkyDrive during the upgrade?

Yes. You will not be able to access your email between Sunday, July 7 at 8 p.m. - Monday, July 8 at 8 p.m. as Microsoft and ITS migrate your email to Office 365. This includes access from email clients on computers, tablets and smartphones.

SkyDrive will also be unavailable beginning Sunday, July 7 until as late as Wednesday, July 10.

No email or files will be lost during the outage and all of your existing email, folders, filters or email forward rules will be automatically applied to your new UNB - Office 365 email.

Will I need to reconfigure my phone, tablet or email client to work with my upgraded email?

No. Following the migration, your email and calendar will continue to work from your mobile device(s) and email client as before.

How will I access my email after the migration?

How you get to your email is not changing. You will be able to access your UNB email and calendar online the same way you do now – via the myUNB Portal.

How will I know I have been upgraded to Office 365?

The icon in the top left of your UNB email window will say ‘Microsoft Office 365’ instead of ‘University of New Brunswick’ (see image below).

Live@edu vs Office 365 Look

What are the major changes with this upgrade to Office 365?

  • You will have two separate accounts:
    • Your UNB email – gives you access to your UNB email and calendar. Get to it via your myUNB Portal.
    • Your Personal Microsoft account – gives you access to your personal SkyDrive and Online Office Apps. Login at https://skydrive.live.com using your ‘UNBloginID@unb.ca’ and a new Password of your choosing. (*Note: you will be required to reset your password the first time you log in to SkyDrive).

These two accounts (UNB email and personal) are not synced so changing your password for one will not change the password for the other.

  • Links that appeared in your Live@edu email will no longer be located within your UNB email. This includes links to UNB webpages, your personal SkyDrive and Online Office Apps.

Will Office 365 look different than my current UNB email?

No, not really. The only differences are the logo in the top left corner and the removal of the links as mentioned above. Other than those two minor changes, after the upgrade your UNB email will look and function the same.

How can I get ready for the upgrade to Office 365?

    • Windows Internet Explorer 9

    • Apple Safari 5
